What is the norovirus?
  • The norovirus is a highly contagious viral infection. It is often called stomach flu or food poisoning.

Prevention is Key
  • Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom and before eating or preparing food. Hand sanitizers may be a helpful addition BUT does not replace hand washing.
  • Carefully wash your fruits and vegetables and DO NOT prepare food for other people.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces especially in your kitchen and bathroom.

images/stories/fluids.jpg What if I get the virus?
  • Dehydration is a big problem, especially for the elderly and people with other illnesses.  Drink plenty of liquids to replenish those lost.  In some cases, you may need to get intravenous fluids.
  • Most people get better within 1 to 2 days after symptoms begin.
  • People with the virus are very contagious from the moment they feel ill to possibly 2 weeks after they recover.  So after you feel better you will still need to limit contact with others for up to 2 weeks.

Staying Safe In the Cold Weather

The cold weather can be very dangerous to older adults.  Here are a few tips for staying safe this winter.
  • Keep your thermostat set no lower than 68 degrees
  • Do not use your stove or oven to heat your home
  • Continue with your daily routine
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration
  • Ask a neighbor to check on you from time to time
  • Try to stay out of the cold as much as possible

If you have a neighbor who is elderly, here are ways you can help:
  • Shovel their walkway or driveway
  • Get their mail for them
  • Call or visit once a day to make sure they are feeling well
